Car theft in Kenya, while being an issue that is hard to ignore, seems to be on the decline as per recent data.
According to a report by the Association of Kenyan Insurers (AKI), in 2024, a total of 327 motor vehicles were stolen.
Despite being an alarming figure, this marks a substantial 28% decrease from the 419 car theft cases documented the year prior.
“The reduction suggests improved security measures and increased vigilance among vehicle owners and law enforcement agencies,” the report stated.
“Despite the decline in thefts, recovery rates remain a concern, with only 15.92 percent of stolen vehicles successfully recovered,” it adds.
The report, as seen in the Star newspaper, which covers 2024, goes on to reveal that of the cars stolen, there are some brand preferences amongst the car thieves.
Based on findings in the report, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, 54.91% of the cars stolen in Kenya were Toyotas.

“Toyota remains the most frequently stolen brand, accounting for 54.91% of reported cases,” the report says.
Station wagons accounted for 67.80% of all vehicle thefts, making them the most stolen vehicle body type.
“Other commonly targeted body types include Lorries (11.46%), Saloons (6.81%) and Pick-ups (3.72%),” the report said.
