France has handed over its last military base in the West African country of Chad to the locals.

This step completes the transfer of French military bases to the Chadian government, as this marks the third base relinquished by France.
This third facility, the Sergeant Adji Kossei base in N’Djamena, was handed over to the West African nation on Wednesday, according to the Chadian General Staff of the Armed Forces.
Those in charge noted that this transfer signifies the final termination of the French military’s involvement in Chad.
The media cited the Chadian officials as saying that the Chadian National Army is ready to take over the administration of the infrastructure that has been recovered, as reported by Sputnik.
Similar to several other West African nations, such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, Chad has chosen to cut its involvement with Western powers.
It recently ended a military pact with France as a result.
Last year in December, France formally handed over its first military base to Chad, a significant step in France’s exit from the Central African country.
Before that, France initiated the process to remove its military presence from Chad, beginning with the withdrawal of two airplanes stationed in the capital, N’Djamena.
Following France’s fallout with Chad, the West African country has accused France of trying to undermine its democracy.
This accusation is following an overnight attack on its presidential palace carried out by 24 people, that occurred on the 8th of January 2025.
The attackers were later confirmed to be local youths from the capital, N’Djamena, as opposed to an organized terrorist group, which French media had alleged orchestrated the assault.
The French news agency, AFP had reported that the attack is believed to have been orchestrated by members of the notorious Boko Haram terrorist group.
The news agency cited unnamed local security sources.
This alleged misinformation led Chad to accuse France of continued interference, as officials in the country noted that France’s assertion of the attack as a coup d’état, was not an accident.
